{everday beautiful life: sweet & low}

Yes, it’s Thursday! Man, am I having a nutty week. If there ever was a week to look at the everday beautiful, this is it. This week, we welcome Megan of Sweet & Low. Below she shares 5 things that make her life beautiful. Ready?

1. {Peacock feathers} I find peacocks to be absolutely stunning and beautiful creatures-they have a subtle grace and elegance to them. Instead of having the traditional vase of fresh flowers on my coffee table, I’ve arranged a bouquet of faux peacock feathers.  Every time I pass by the table and see them, I am immediately reminded of all the little beauties of nature.

2. {Hand-written letters} These days, with technological advancements like IPhones, Facebook and Twitter, snail mail seems far and in between.  Sure, it may be quick and easy to send a text message.  Still, nothing compares to receiving a hand-written letter from a family member or friend via the old-fashioned way.

3. {Farmers’ Markets} One of my favorite things to enjoy during the summer months is a weekend trip to a local farmers’ market.  Grocery store produce just can’t compare to the bright colors and smells of home grown tomatoes and peaches.  I recently discovered apple butter and now I just can’t get enough.

4. {Baking} If I’m sad, I bake.  If I’m excited or anxious, I bake.  If I just got the best news of my life, I bake.  Can you see a trend? I tend spend a lot of late summer nights and long weekends scouring websites and old cookbooks for new recipes to try.  I have a killer sweet tooth and love to bake pies, tarts, breads, cakes, cookies…and essentially anything that calls for chocolate.  I like to think of my time in the kitchen as a cheaper alternative to therapy: I just love the idea of creating something delicious from different ingredients and then sharing it with the people I love the most.

5. {Black & White Photography} Two summers ago I took a 2-week trip to Italy, staying in Rome, Venice and Florence.  The experience was probably the best 14 days of my life and I truly cannot wait to go back. While I was there I took hundreds of pictures of hidden alleyways, cozy little mom & pop shops and gorgeous old Italian architecture, all of which were in black and white.  Getting back to the States and developing the film was absolutely breathtaking.  An entire wall of my bedroom is devoted to photos from my trip. To me, nothing is more precious, beautiful or inspirational than that collection of photos.

{everyday beautiful life: frolic!}

This week’s {EBL} is from a little blogger named Chelsea of Frolic! and Urban Weeds. Perhaps you’ve heard of her? If you haven’t then please extract yourself from the rock you’ve been under and go visit, after you’ve read this post, that is.

1. {Good Food} I love, love, love great food. Whether it’s a great meal cooked by family or a dinner out at a great Portland restaurant with friends, food often makes my day!

2. {Family} I relish any second I get to spend with my two nieces and two nephews. Kids offer such a refreshing perspective on life.

3. {Flowers} I’ve always been a wee bit obsessed with flowers. Whether it’s a stroll through a garden or a bunch of daisies from the farmer’s market, flowers make each day brighter.

4. {Bicycles} I don’t think life gets lovelier than a bike ride down a hill on a sunny day.

5. {Picnics} A combination of everything I love: nature. food. good friends. I even have picnics in the winter!

4. {A Bath} Nothing can change my mood like a nice bath. Even better if you add a nice scent or bath crystals to soak in.

6. {TV on DVD} I love to get a boxed set and sit and watch the whole season at once. Another of my guilty pleasures.

7. {Blogs & Bloggers} I read so many blogs!!! and all the people who read mine truly make my day. I always say I just love the blogging community.

{everyday beautiful life: concrete & honey}

I’m happy to welcome Nicola of Concrete & Honey for this weeks {EBL}. If you haven’t visited it, you’ll want to by the end of this post. She really does have a talent for seeing beauty in everything. I’m absolutely terrified of spiders, but she can even make me appreciate a spider! {I tell you, that is no small task.} I also believe, as you likely will after reading below, that Nicola has mastered the art of beautiful manner and writing.

To the lovely Ms. Jenn,

What a beautiful series you have developed, I am so flattered to be part of it and have loved reading about the where beauty is found in the lives of the contributors so far. How do I live beautifully? How do I narrow it down to just 5-10? From creamy yogurt to magazines and books, pen and paper, fluffy muffins, a perfect coffee, my nephew’s white hair, my sisters bellies full of babies – there is beauty in most everything if you look hard enough, but it’s easiest to see in the things you love the most, these things for me are:

1. {flowers} – A reminder of the absolute perfection of nature, flowers feed my soul.

2. {hand washing} – I work long hours and drop my laundry off at the laundromat, but I make time to cook and I make time to hand wash my beautiful fragile items and hang them out to dry in the sunshine.

3. {bed} – Clean white sheets in summer and cozy pink flanelette sheets in winter. I love sleep and love bed. It’s where I study, draw, write, read, blog

4. {ceramics} – To acquire something fragile and beautiful made by capable hands is a gift and my favourite form of art.

5. {baking} – There’s only one thing more satisfying that baking a beautiful cake; and that’s…

6. {eating cake} …and sharing it with friends and family over hot tea, warm chatter and much laughter.

7. {collected in my travels} – I treasure the bits and pieces i have collected along the journey of my life and are all reminders of where my passion for travel has taken me and what my loved ones have bestowed upon me. i spend a lot of my time dreaming of Paris.

{everyday beautiful life: pretty little world}

This week’s {EBL} comes from Kristen of Pretty Little World, a blogger who has been nothing but lovely to me. She’s never hesitated to help me out and was the first to blogroll me. I’m very glad to have her as part of this series.

{5 Things That Make for a Beautiful Life}

First I would like to send a big.huge “Thank you!” to Jenn for this opportunity to share a few of the things that make life beautiful!!

1. {Little Things in Nature}

There are so many amazing things that people pass by every day that are stunning and lovely. Even the intricate detail on one blossom is inspiring! This is probably why spring and summer are my favorite seasons — there’s just so much to look at whenever you leave the house! And there’s never any shortage of flowers to cut and bring inside!

2. {Fashion}

{Altamira and The Sartorialist}

This may be obvious given what I usually write about, but fashion is absolutely one of the most beautiful things a person can use/create. Every day you’ve got an opportunity to completely change the way that you feel, all depending on what you put on in the morning!

3. {My Blogger Friends…}

…all of them!! Ever since I’ve started blogging, I’ve discovered a community that’s completely blown me away. I’m always struck by the beauty of the people that I encounter — the generosity that is extended from people whom I’ve never met in person amazes me. Each day that I read everyone’s blogs is also a new opportunity for me to learn and be inspired!

4. {My Kitties}

As big of a pain as they can be sometimes (for instance, our only male cat has taken to wanting to wedge himself between a window and all of our glass spice jars), they always make me happy. I have yet to get through a day where they haven’t made me laugh.

5. {Reading & Writing}

{fieldguided}

This might sound silly, but I’m a big believer that spending a little bit of time writing in a journal or reading a book can turn your day around. Even if you can only get 10 or 15 minutes a day for this, it’s still transformative. To me this is also just proof that you don’t have to leave the house to find beautiful things — you just have to open up a book!

{everyday beautiful life: la la lovely}

It’s that time again! {I’m really loving this series.} This week we have 8 things that make Trina of La La Lovely‘s life beautiful. Please visit her la la lovely blog, and don’t forget to read her “about me”, which is written in rhyme.

{Family & Friends} I have to say there is nothing more meaningful in life than people and especially the people that you love. Things are just things…we get tired of them, they break and/or become useless to us. But the relationships and love that we have, last forever. Love never fails!

{Books} I like to read all kinds of books. And usually I have two or three going at a time. I love reading books that are educational (or ok, to be honest, self help books). Any kind of book that helps me to grow and become a better person.

And of course, I love a good fiction book. I love classic novels. Escaping to another time and another place is what I love the most. Especially on a rainy or overcast day. My favorites are Jane Austen and the sisters Bronte. I don’t always rely on classics because, let’s face, it a good escape from reality sometimes requires totally checking out and for that I rely on chick-lit. I am always drawn to the ones where the girl is traveling abroad or swapping lives or something of that nature.

And last, but certainly not least, I read my Message Bible. This is the one thing that probably brings the most beauty of ALL to my life. Learning and living a life of Love is what it is all about for me.

{Flowers} I have a habit of buying myself flowers. It’s always nice to receive them from your sweetheart but let’s be honest, that sometimes only happens on special occasions. So, why not treat yourself and make the everyday a special occasion? I find that adding even the smallest flower brings such beauty and life to my home. Every time I get a glance I feel a little calmer and happier.

{Tea & Chocolate} I often ask myself, and others, if I had to choose between tea or coffee for the rest of my life, which would it be? And for me, it would certainly be tea. There is something magical and soothing about tea. I always love to make and share a cup of tea for my friends and dear ones. And there is nothing better than having a piece of quality chocolate with your tea.

{Writing} I love to write. Time doesn’t afford me the luxury of writing as much as I would please but when I get a quiet moment or inspiration strikes my soul feels alive. I’ve always kept a journal, I write little stories, and my sister and I write letters back and forth (one of my prized possessions). And actually, one reason I started my blog was an outlet for writing.

{Beauty Products} To me a new eye shadow, face cream or lip-gloss is the perfect pick me up. We all have days were we don’t feel that good about ourselves and I love the feeling of buying something that promises to transform your looks and your life. Of course it doesn’t do that most of the time. But it does add a little glow and shimmer and what can that hurt?

{Travel} I do love to travel. I don’t always like the leaving others behind and the actual getting there bit, but once I am there I love the discovering. For me it’s not just about being there but it’s about what you bring back…the memories, the food, the style, and the trinkets that garnish your home. The most lovely part is that the place kind of stays in your soul.

{Giving Back} It’s not all about ME. It is about others. I find that when I am always thinking about myself I’m usually pretty unhappy but when I look outside of myself and do something for someone else that is what is really fulfilling. I sometimes get caught up in the idea that helping others and making a difference has to be a huge effort but I’m learning more and more each day that sometimes it is the little things that can make the biggest difference. All it takes is looking at your own sphere of influence and helping someone that is already around you (a friend, a neighbor, a grandparent, etc.). And sometimes it is as easy as giving out a smile, listening to someone that needs a friend, making a meal or babysitting.

{everyday beautiful life: city sage}

This week’s {EBL} is by Anne from City Sage. Anne is one of my top blog reads, so be sure to stop by and become addicted to her blog, if you aren’t already. {She has a lovely giveaway going on, too!} Ok, lets get started.

1. {Layered textiles}: The sight and the feel of a beautifully made bed or a cozy couch throw makes me swoon. Whether it’s knits and flannels in winter or crisp cottons and linens come summer, nothing brings more pleasure than burrowing under the covers.

2. {Perfume and Home Fragrance}: Smell is our most powerful and least appreciated sense. I don’t do scent every day; rather, I spritz Tom Ford’s White Patchouli before a night on the town, or I light my favourite Diptyque candle to welcome guests. Fragrance is my way of marking special occasions.

3. {Mementos}: All the knickknacks on display in our house have significance. We’ve acquired them on our travels, we’re received them as gifts, or we’ve purchased them as tributes to our personality quirks (brass squirrels, anyone?). Our bric-a-brac is a life’s history in object form.

4. {Fruit}: I must have been a parrot or a spider monkey in a previous life, because I just can’t get enough fruit! I love to eat it of course—especially grapes, cherries, and watermelon—but I also admire photos of fruit, fields of fruit, displays of fruit in the store. Fruit is nature’s sweetness in all its glory!

5. {Girly Indulgences}: Flowers and frills, lingerie and lace—just a little touch of something ladylike every day. I think we all need to celebrate our softer sides when the world out there feels hard. Even my mother-in-law, a truly stubborn tomboy, keeps her toiletries in a Liberty print bag.

6. {A Statement Chair}: You don’t need a lot to make a space memorable. A single stand-out chair will do the trick. Pick one that sums up your taste—perhaps a posh yet quirkily upholstered fauteuil, or a sleek Paulistano—put it in your most blah room, and let it work its magic. Instant transformation!

{everyday beautiful life: swoonworthy}

This week, the lovely Paige of Swoonworthy & Lady Luck shares 7 things and ways to make her life more beautiful. As you’ll see in Paige’s post, simple acts can much improve your life. Take note lovely readers!

1. A made bed. This may sound like a silly one, especially to start with, but taking the time to make the bed in the morning really makes my life a bit more beautiful (a less stressed life is a beautiful life to me!). It starts the day off on a productive note, and feels so much better getting into at the end of a long day. My suggestion is to invest in a pretty duvet and, if possible, large square European pillows/shams that can also act as a headboard if you’re lacking one (I found my set on clearance at Bed, Bath, & Beyond, so it just goes to show pretty things don’t have to be expensive). It instantly feels more glamorous. And I’ve found a made bed automatically makes your bedroom look cleaner, even if your entire wardrobe is on the floor!.

2. Looking put-together everyday. Sweats may be the only thing you have energy to put on in the morning, but try channeling the French and take a minute to put yourself together before you go out. You’ll immediately have more self-confidence, and what’s more beautiful than that? I have made this easier for myself by putting together a routine that I follow every morning. If you wear makeup, put together a little station for yourself where you apply your makeup/do your hair every morning. I have also organized my wardrobe by color (I’ll admit I’m a little obsessive-compulsive at times…), and have stored away my fall/winter items so I don’t have to dig through them to find my spring/summer clothing. It makes putting together outfits so much easier, especially when you’re half asleep. People often think I’ve spent a long time getting ready; but honestly, if you get a routine down and get into the habit of coordinating nice-looking outfits, it becomes just another part of your life. It’s that easy. (If you are struggling with coordinating outfits, I would love to offer free styling advice. Feel free to email me here. If you live in the Seattle area, I can even help you go through your wardrobe in person!)

3. Displaying beautiful things in your space. I have little vignettes arranged throughout my apartment, all of items that I either find beautiful, or have a special meaning to me: family heirlooms, artwork I have created, pretty books, a Buddha from my travels to India, pretty teacups, etc. Now, this doesn’t mean clutter up every surface; but dedicate a space to fill with a few carefully selected items that mean something to you. Change it up every once in awhile.
Another way of doing this is through a coffee table project I recently completed. I have a lot of scraps I consider art (found playing cards, small letterpress cards, scraps of fabric, etc) that I want to keep on display. Instead of spending an arm and a leg framing all of them, I had a piece of glass cut to fit our coffee table and now use it as a rotating gallery for my “artsy bits.” I’ll probably frame them someday, but for now this is a perfect solution.

{A beautiful & simple room}

4. Not having too much “stuff.” I used to have a lot of stuff (well, my boyfriend thinks I still do…), but I have gotten quite good at doing routine purges of things I simply do not use anymore. I keep a bag near the door, and when I realize I haven’t used something in a long time, or am no longer attracted to it, I put it in the bag. When it fills up, I take it to Goodwill. It keeps our apartment and wardrobes looking nice because only the good stuff makes the cut. Sure, there’s the anxiety of, “But what if I need it?” Well, you probably won’t. And all those ticket stubs and little mementos scattered here and there? Unless you’re going to put them all into a beautiful, well-organized scrapbook or file system (or coffee table gallery!), get rid of them. Just because you throw them out doesn’t mean the memory of the occasion goes with it. It will make life so much easier to navigate, and yes, beautiful.

{Paige’s apartment}

5. Our 1920s apartment. The second we walked into it with our landlord, I knew it was the one. If it had one more bedroom and an outdoor space, I might consider living in it forever. It has perfect old-world charm: coved ceilings, crown moulding, built-ins, a separate dining room, wood floors, a circular floorplan, a front and back door, and a view of the Space Needle (yes, all in an apartment!). We’ve been considering buying a home, but we just haven’t come across anything that compares to our cute little place on the top of Queen Anne Hill in Seattle. Despite its tiny kitchen and bathroom (and lack of dishwasher and in-unit washer/dryer), it is apartment perfection in our opinion. We absolutely love living here and realize everyday just how lucky we were to find it.

6. The city of Seattle. Come for a visit and you’ll understand. This place is beyond beautiful.

{Paige & her beau}

7. Having someone or something to truly love. This can be a pet, a family member, a spouse, anyone. For me, it’s my boyfriend. We have been together for three years and have endured quite a lot, including nearly two years of long-distance, and my battle with cancer last year. He loved me even when I would look in the mirror and see a completely different person, overweight and balding from all of the chemotherapy chemicals I was receiving. We share all housework and cleaning, go on lots of walks, and always make each other laugh. We make sure to never take things too seriously, are always completely honest with each other (even if the truth is hard to hear), and never go to bed upset. He is my rock and the most beautiful thing in the world to me.

Thanks Paige!

{things that make life beautiful}

Remember how I mentioned that I’d be placing an emphasis on different kinds of beauty in our lives? Well, I am very excited to announce a new series entitled Everyday Beautiful Life {creative title, I know.} In this series, I will be presenting to you what makes life beautiful from different bloggers, photographers, artists, and other figures. I hope that this will help you re-evaluate how you see the world and how you find beauty in your own life.

Below, are a few things that make my life beautiful or ways to make it more so. Enjoy!

{Creating} I can’t think of anything more that helps me appreciate how wonderful this life is. It doesn’t matter how large or how small, the act of creating something brings me joy. I love the challenge. I love the contrast in the moments of stress compared to the victory of having overcome some hurdle in the process. I always learn something new in the process. I love the release it provides, and every time I’m finished with a creation, I am more inspired than I was when I started.

{Belle Fleur candles. My favorite}

{Sensuality} Please, get the idea that sensuality equals sexuality out of your head. Too many people think that way! Our senses are our window to the world around us and they are very much tied to our thoughts, emotions, and moods. It is extremely important to stimulate your senses in a positive way on a daily basis. It can be as simple as making sure to light a scented candle, playing some jazz, or using silk sheets. {Look for a post on having a sensual home in the next few days.}

{Flowers} There is nothing lovelier than fresh flowers in a home. Whenever I’ve had a particularly bad day, I pick up a bouquet (and some champagne perhaps) to enjoy at home. Having that extra bit of beauty in my home always helps improve my mood.

{Entertaining} Maybe it’s the Pisces in me, but I like wrapping people up in a world I create. I love throwing parties. It’s wonderful to sit back and see everyone enjoy themselves. When we were children, we always looked forward to parties of all sorts, but I feel that when we grow up, the lighthearted fun and creativity gets sucked out of parties. It is my pleasure to provide the opportunity.

{Friends, Family & the dog} Without loved ones, what would life be? There is a story about a whale with an unusual call being tracked by NOAA that has been calling out for several years with no response. The whale never gives up. We’re not that different from the whale. We need and call out for interaction with others whom make our lives richer and fulfilled.

{Giving} Giving is best when the other person does not expect it. A selfless act of giving will do more for the soul than any gift you could receive yourself. Random acts of kindness are by nature random acts of beauty.

{Christmas} Giving presents. Creating beautiful things. Expressing my imagination with tons of Christmas trees. Opening presents like a child on Christmas Day. Family and friends all around. Do I really need to go on about why Christmas makes my life beautiful? {We start November 1st at my house.}

{Children} Seeing children grow, their fascination with new things, and their personalities keeps me grounded. Do you remember what it was like to run until you couldn’t breathe and to jump for no reason at all? How much joy did the smallest and simplest things bring you? How often did you use your imagination as a child? {Remember that box that you turned into a house or a rocket ship?} Why do we need to let go of that? Growing up should not mean losing your passion or joy! Children are a reminder of how it is often our behaviors that need to be changed. If you’ve ever seen a child throw a tantrum and then get up like nothing ever happened a minute later, you should understand that we as adults do not need to let our negative emotions linger; that is a learned behavior which we should unlearn. What’s more, ever since I became a mom, I see the potential in every person that much more because I can see it in my son. His sincerity and wit bring beauty to my life every single day.

{Science} I don’t believe that science should make the world seem less miraculous. If anything, it should make the world seem more so! Being able to understand the complexities of time, space, and life has made me appreciate this world and all the things I experience in it so much more.

{Travel & Culture}
I’ve always loved to travel since I was a child, but ever since I majored in History in college, my wanderlust has gotten much worse. To have studied different cultures, their evolution, and to learn how it has influenced my own has given me a sense of perspective that I greatly value. I believe that learning about cultures (including learning the languages) other than our own helps us reach an understanding of our own place in the world. I think that this is one of the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves and our children. It is the best way to reach peace and erase ignorance and fear of what is different. Being able to travel is one of the most important goals in my life. Luckily my son loves to travel, too.
